Traditional Tuscans of distinction. It’s the season of long dark winter evenings so put a little of Italy’s glorious sunshine in your wine rack. These 6 specially selected wines, some award-winning and others with unique credentials, are designed for those moments when you wish to select a bottle of wine fitting for a special occasion.
Each case contains one of each of the following wines:
Vermentino Toscana IGT 2017: produced near the city of towers, San Gimignano, this wine is made from the native Vermentino variety. The grapes are picked early to maintain their delicate freshness. Hints of sage, basil, mint, apple and pear don’t disappoint the nose, while the smooth, rounded palate has a good acid balance. An ideal wine for an aperitif or to serve alongside fish or pasta.
Vernaccia di San Gimignano Riserva 2016: the grapes for Vernaccia di San Gimignano Riserva are picked when they reach the perfect balance of sugar and acidity. After a short maceration on the skins, the must is fermented at a controlled temperature in 700 litre barrels, where it then matures for over 18 months. The nose has notes of citrus, peach and apple, with a touch of vanilla. The flavour is very rich, fresh, balanced and persistent. A good match for fried or grilled fish and seafood, pasta, vegetarian dishes, cured meats and medium-aged cheeses.
Allegra Toscana IGT Rosata 2017: a modern style of rosé, lively and delicate enough to enjoy by the glass or with food, thanks to its structure. This blend of Merlot and Syrah spent 5 months in stainless steel tanks with extended lees contact. A subtle aroma of strawberry and cherry with a fresh, mineral palate and red fruit flavours. It goes well with caprese salad, fried vegetables, pizza or pasta.
Chianti Classico DOCG 2014: a unique blend of Sanglovese, Canaiolo and Colorino. Aromas of lavender, rose petal, earthy mushroom, wet leaves and a touch of dried red fruits. A soft, mature and rustic wine with well-expressed tannins and a good ability to age, it goes well with any type of roast meat, including game and cheeses.
Mosaico Bolgheri DOC 2015: Merlot combined with Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. It is aged for a minimum of 12 months in French oak barrels and 6 months in bottle. This wine is bottled without any previous fining or filtration to preserve all its integrity, so may need decanting. Deep ruby red with typical notes of cassis, blackcurrant and ripe red fruits, enhanced by cinnamon, coffee and tobacco. A perfect accompaniment to red meats, game, richly-sauced pasta, risotto and medium-aged cheeses.
Brunello Di Montalcino DOCG 2013: An award-winning wine that appears on the list of both the Quirinale (Rome’s Presidential palace) and the Vatican. Classically elegant with notes of tobacco, smoke and mushroom overlying a mineral/graphite structure. A good accompaniment to meat or sauce based dishes, strong, mature cheeses such as Parmesan or Pecorino.
