Brunello di Montalcino La Togata comes from the Angel family, which has only been producing wine since 1990. Although they can be regarded as a relatively young company, their wines are already on the wine list of the Quirinale and the Vatican. Their wines have also been enjoyed by such well-known names as Bill Gates, Bill Clinton, George Bush, and Tony Blair. Brunello di Montalcino La Togata DOCG 2013 has many admirers and has consistently received high scores and top awards from many highly-respected experts across the wine industry.
La Togata is a small family company with vineyards in the south of Montalcino (Lavacchio, Montosoli, and Pietrafocai) and wine cellars in the area of S. Angelo in Colle.
Every stage of production is conducted with maximum attention and dedication: from the choice of natural products for the care of the vineyards, to the hand-pruning, the choice of grapes for winemaking, the temperature of the fermentation, right through to the length of ageing in medium-sized casks of Slavonian oak that balances the fruit characteristics, allowing the wine to develop in the best way possible. The goal is not to produce a wine like any other but one that can be appreciated as an individual, in which you can feel all the love and passion that this small company puts into crafting it.
Inssieme, from producer Nick Salussolia, was recently compared with the most famous Supertuscan wines, Sassicaia, Ornellaia, Guado al Tasso, Solaia and Tignanello, in a blind-tasting event led by sommeliers, wine technicians, journalists, and wine marketing experts. Surprisingly, the Inssieme wine was ranked second, a great achievement in such illustrious company. The tasting took place in the restaurant of the professional sommelier and former president of AIS Toscana, Saverio Carmagnini.
" Inssieme is a wine of great strength,” Carmagnini said. “The tannins are not aggressive and, despite the alcohol content, it is a very pleasant wine to drink. It shows a good all over balance. Another plus of Inssieme is the price, at least 50% lower than the more famous labels in the tasting, to which it is very comparable!”
Paolo Marchi is the oenologist responsible for Inssieme. Born in 1976, he qualified with top honors in both agronomy and enology. Over the years, Paolo has acquired enormous field experience, collaborating with renowned Tuscan vineyards and wineries. As a winemaker and consultant since 2008, he crafts wines of great personality, finesse and elegance. From his finely tuned skills and sensitive palate come multi-award-winning wines that dominate major international rankings every year.
Podere Lecci e Brocchi
Until 2010 the Lecci e Brocchi family had been producing and selling their wines in bulk to the best producers in the surrounding locality. However, at the time of the 2011 harvest the farm’s management was passed down to Sabrina, her husband Giancarlo and son Giovanni, a new generation with a different outlook and approach, resulting in a major change in strategy and direction for this long-established winery.
That is when they started what they called their “beautiful adventure”. With great courage, supported by Sabrina’s parents, they took the decision not to sell any more wine in bulk. On August 1, 2012 they bottled the first batch of Chianti Classico DOCG 2010, the result of immense commitment, hard work, ideas and …. so many dreams!
At the beginning of 2014 they began exporting the first small batches of wine and started receiving good reviews from journalists, sommeliers and industry experts; the 2012 vintage was judged among the best of the Chianti Classico Berardenga at AIS in Milan. The winery’s profile and reputation grow year after year.
Azienda Agricola De Triachi
The Amiata slope is located in a superb and wonderful landscape, surrounded by the Siena hills and Maremma countryside. A truly valuable vineyard that repeatedly and consistently produces noble fruit of excellent quality.
This is the De Triachi farm, deep in the green Seggiano hills. De Triachi is composed of 19 hectares: 3.8 ha of vineyard, 2.5 of olive groves and the remainder mainly woodland.
Whilst De Triachi is a relatively young winery, with the first vineyard planted in 2005, the Morganti family have an immense and strong bond with this land, as it has belonged to them since the 12th century!
Azienda Agraria Motta
Since 1987 the Motta family have been directing operations on their farm, La Tartaruga. The farmlands are in a superb location among the small hills of Argentiera, 10 kms to the south of Grosseto, virtually opposite the Maremma Park.
The Motta uses only environmentally-friendly agricultural methods on their land. Favorable environmental factors – a unique microclimate, perfect exposure to sun and wind, and soil type – and outstanding personal commitment ensure they create authentic wines of their terroir.
With an excellent local reputation for good wines, this well-established, relatively small winery continues to deliver consistent quality year after year.
Fattoria Casa di Terra
The Casa di Terra estate was established in 1950 by the grandfather of the current owners, Giuliano and Gessica, brother and sister. The winery is located in Bolgheri, in the heart of the prestigious Tuscan wine producing region.
These lands were once dedicated to traditional crops (cereals, horticulture, olive oil, wine) but over the years much of this activity declined, leaving more space and opportunity for planting vineyards. In 2001 the decision was made to change direction and to focus most of the energy of the estate into winemaking.
The Casa di Terra estate is still owned and managed by the family; it comprises 120 ha, with 45 ha of vineyards in the DOC Bolgheri and IGT Toscana. The rest of the land is still cultivated with olive trees and crops and there is also an Agriturismo (B&B).
The vineyards have very variable soil composition which, together with the efforts and dedication of the family, consistently produce well-regarded and complex red and white wines.
Azienda Agricola San Benedetto
The story behind this wine begins in 1826, when the Giannelli family ran a small farm with vineyards, olive groves and livestock in the locality of San Benedetto.
This property, called "Podere Casaccia” was managed in the old traditional system of share-cropping until the early 1960's. Then the brothers Dario and Giuseppe and their sons took the major decision to break with tradition and to buy their first piece of land.
Years of hard work and commitment followed but in 1975, on the first piece of land they had bought, they invested again and built the first part of the cellar, giving it the Giannelli family name. Over the following years the vineyard expanded and developed through hard work, commitment and further investment, resulting in new vineyards and a winery with the most up-to-date equipment.
In 1998 the company changed its name to Azienda Agricola San Benedetto – a change in name but not in approach, ethos or culture. Giovanni, Andrea and Marco are still working with the same passion to produce wines of top quality and excellent value for money.
Azienda Agricola Codecasa Giada
300 million years ago the Valsesia's super-volcano exploded bringing lava from deep in the earth to the surface. Much later, with the melting of the Monte Rosa glacier, a fertile and unique terrain and landscape was formed: the Colline Novaresi were born.
On this precious soil Giada and her father Vittorio decided to plant their first vineyard in 1996. They also restored the beautiful 17th century farm where they built the cellar, the office and the wine tasting area under a spacious arcade. Here in the heart of Piedmont, at the foot of the spectacular Monte Rosa massif, between Bogogno and Romagnano Sesia, over a period of just a few years, they planted about ten hectares of vineyards.
Today the philosophy with which Ca’ Nova produce their wines is based on a combination of high quality estate-grown grapes and the care and attention they devote to the winemaking.
Azienda Agricola Alemat
Alemat was born in the heart and mind of Savio Dominici at the end of eighties. Everything started with a wine bottle and friendship with one of the most skilled wine producers in Langhe.
The love of wines and vineyards grew and in 2012 Savio and his wife Elisabetta decided to change their life and to achieve what had always been their great dream. Since then this winery has progressed rapidly, building its profile and its reputation throughout the region, and delivering Savio and Elisabetta’s dream to delighted connoisseurs.
Azienda Agricola Ribote
Azienda Agricola Ribote is a family-run company that respects and follows centuries-old traditions of viticulture to create wine that is as natural and healthy as possible. They took the name Ribote in 1980, calling the winery after their cascina (farmhouse), on a slope of the hills in the town of Dogliani, at San Luigi.
The vineyards are exposed to the south-west, receiving plenty of sunshine throughout the day, and the vines grow on calcareous soils at an altitude of between 200 and 600 metres. Ribote cultivates 35 hectares of land with passion, with 20-60 year old guyot-trained vines covering the slopes. The culture is purely organic: their strong desire is to maintain their soil in good condition in the traditional way, without synthetic chemicals, in order to protect the balance of nature in the vineyards and to make wines that are equally clean and healthy and reflect their terroir in all its complexity.
The Cellario family are very passionate producers who focus on the grapes that come from their own region. This concentration on local produce, combined with long experience and skill, has allowed the winery to build a strong reputation for sought-after quality wines throughout the whole locality.
Since 1971 the family have worked in the winery created by Mr Cellario Giampietro. Their old farmhouse in Sabinotti sits on a hill between the towns of Monchiero and Dogliani. The family cellar was built in Carrù, a town nicknamed the Gateway to the Langhe because in the past it was one of the biggest grape markets in the area, as well as having a tollbooth and a railway station.
The family’s aim is to make natural and genuine wine. The grapes are entirely hand-picked and are pressed within a few hours. The fermentation is spontaneous, using indigenous yeasts, and the wines have a very low level of sulphites. They are not fined. The stainless steel tanks are used just for vinification; the wines are aged in big, untoasted oak barrels, cement vats or amphorae, depending on the grape variety.
Azienda Agricola Vitivinicola Cascina I Carpini
Timorasso wine is produced by a young and ambitious producer who bought his vineyards at the end of the millennium. The producer sees himself producing a wine that speaks to the soul before the body, a wine that encapsulates the very spirit of life.
Today, after years of passionate work, he shares with us the great satisfaction of creating wines that correspond to his imagination, thereby delivering something a little different and of excellent quality.
Cascina I Carpini has obtained certifications from Green Care and VeganOK, and is in the process of conversion for the European Organic Wine Certification.
Azienda Vitivinicola Giacometto Bruno
The company is a continuation of a family tradition that began centuries ago. Bruno started managing the company in 2001 and modernised the winery in 2006. He produces 20,000 bottles of wine annually.
Bruno says about himself: “The first traces of the Giacometto family in the records of Caluso Church date back to the sixteenth century. I was born in Clause in 1961 to a peasant family consisting of my father Giuseppe, mother Nella and brother Aldo. The nickname of the family is ‘Burane’ (burane are, in Caluso dialect, dens in barns where in the past the young men of the family went to sleep).
“I have always been passionate about working the land and, despite studying Computer Science at the University of Turin, I always left a little time to cultivate my passion for the vineyards, winery and wine, increasingly interested in the cultivation of vineyards and the production of wines with the aim of continuing the family tradition.” In 2016, Azienda Vitivinicola Giacometto Bruno began the process of conversion to organic farming.
Azienda Agricola Pietro Rinaldi
Azienda Agricola Pietro Rinaldi is in constant passionate pursuit of high quality through con-tinuous improvement of the vineyards, great care in the cultivation of grapes, and precise vinification methods.
The vineyards are located all around the winery, Cascina Cicchetta. Different varieties have been planted, including Dolcetto, Barbera, Nebbiolo, Arneis and Moscato. The cellar was built recently and equipped with state-of-the-art technology.
Azienda Agricola Veglio Michelino & Figlio
Born in 1935, Michelino left school at the age of 10 in order to help his father. His efforts (he’s still working, aged 80) resulted in the winery’s steady expansion and the planting of new Barbera and Nebbiolo vineyards, for Barolo, alongside the original Dolcetto vines.
Michelino’s son Osvaldo, the winery’s current owner, joined the company in the early 1990s. In 2007 Osvaldo’s brother-in-law Marco arrived and, thanks to consultant Sebastiano Ramello, the wines found new markets. Simone, the latest family member, joined the company in July 2014, and a new cellar, with a maturation section and a tasting hall, was inaugurated in September 2015.
The wines of Cantina Veglio Michelino & Figlio speak of the land from which they come. The vineyard is at the heart of everything. It offers both joy and sorrow – and each bottle contains not simply wine but also the family’s study and research, disappointment and satisfaction. Love of this land, the desire to protect it and increase its value, have guided the company since 1870.
Terra Argillosa, founded by Raffaele Paolini and Dwight Stanford in 2007, is at Offida, in the Colli Piceni of the southern Marche region.
The 6 hectare vineyard lies 180 metres above sea level, in a small valley with rich clay soils and the sea breeze from the Adriatic to cool the vines.
The vineyard, planted with both local and international varieties, is managed organically and the ripe grapes are mainly hand-picked. There is also a kitchen garden with hens and geese, and an agriturismo (B&B). The four people who run the estate look to the past to create their future, building something new from the wisdom of tradition and the old ways of farming as a community. They call it Terra Argillosa, clay soil: it’s all about sticking together, working together to create a better society.
The Moroder family has been growing grapes in Conero, in Italy’s Marche region, since 1837. The winery is in the Conero Natural Park, at the edge of the Appenine Mountains and overlooking the Adriatic. It is run by Marco and Mattia Moroder, the seventh generation of the family to make wine here.
The vineyard specialises in the native Montepulciano grape variety. Thanks to its position half a mile from the coast and an elevation of 600 ft above sea level, the Moroders farm using natural viticultural methods and their wines are included in the Vino Slow Slowine list. Their winery is on ground level and underground, ensuring cool, even temperatures year-round and they use naturally-occurring yeasts.
Their flagship wine, Dorico, has won numerous awards, and has been named both as one of the 30 wines that contributed to the history of Italian oenology and as one of Italy’s top 100 wines.
Vigneti Valle Roncati
The vineyards are located around the towns of Briona, Ghemme and Sizzano, in the hills, at around 260 metres above sea level. The soil is clay mixed with stones and pebbles that help reduce plant vigour and produce better-quality grapes. Dense planting means each vine produces fewer, better grapes, and they use other viticultural techniques designed to respect the environment and improve grape quality.
They do much of the vineyard work by hand, always striving for top quality. Grapes are very carefully selected, with green harvesting to reduce the number of bunches on each vine. The final harvest is done by hand: the grapes are rigorously selected and picked into small crates before being taken to the winery. There they are pressed immediately, to maintain maximum fruit character and the aromas typical of the variety and the region.
The Roncati family, originally from northern Piedmont (home of some of the region’s most famous wines), decided to move to the eastern hills of the province to create their wines, a decision dictated by both their heads and their hearts.
The soil of their 13 ha vineyard hoding, at the foot of the slopes and in the valleys, is morainic, recently eroded material full of mineral salts. Summers are relatively cool and rainy, allowing the vines to flourish and produce excellent-quality grapes full of aroma and character.
Roncati grow Nebbiolo along with other local grape varieties such as Barbera, Vespolina, Uva Rara and Erbaluce. They use modern, environmentally-friendly vineyard techniques and that essential element of great winemaking: passion.
The story of wine in Romagna is the story of the region’s people, the tough, straightforward peasant communities who maintained and developed a culture of wine-making that now produces internationally-respected wines.
This is also Celli’s story: set up in 1963 in Bertinoro and run by the Sirri and Casadei families, locally nicknamed Bron and Rusèval.
Celli’s wines, originally simple and for local consumption, are now accepted as classics of the region.
With nearly 60 years of experience, the company selects grapes from an array of vineyards around Bertinoro, where they are constantly striving to improve the quality, typicity and balance of their cru wines and blends.
With 35 hectares of vines, they only use their own grapes. They are currently converting their vineyard and winery to organic methods.
The vineyards are all near the hill-town of Bertinoro, in Emilia-Romagna, north-east Italy, where a variety of soils and micro-climatic conditions produce four separate styles. These are vinified separately, and bottled either as cru wines, in good years, and/or as blends that still show all the character of their terroir.
The Rillo family, who own and run Fontanavecchia, have been growing vines and making wine in the Sannio region of Campania for over 160 years, making them one of the oldest producers in the area. It is partly thanks to them that the once-ignored ancient local varieties Falanghina and Aglianico are known and appreciated world-wide today.
The family owns 18 hectares of vines in the Torrecuso district near Benevento, at the foot of Mount Taburno, an extinct volcano. The business is managed by Libero Rillo with the help and experience of his father, Orazio, and brother, Giuseppe. Their winery, originally built in the 19th century, has been expanded and is now one of the best facilities in Campania. They focus on creating excellent wine from top-quality grapes produced by healthy vines, favouring quality over quantity at all levels, from soil to bottle. The vineyards are cultivated using organic methods and the grapes are harvested by hand.
The Rillos say that “wine, just like humans, lives, breathes, matures, and transforms itself again once poured into the glass. That is the moment when its heart starts to beat and, like a good storyteller, inebriates, warms and enchants the soul.” As wine reflects the soil, the people and the history of a place, so Fontanavecchia’s wines reflect those of Sannio.
